A total of 6,388 new movers came to Nevada in January. More than a third of those surrendering driver licenses and ID cards at the DMV last month came from California. Of the nearly 65,000 new movers who came to Southern Nevada last year, 57% were male and 43% were female. 56% of new movers were between the ages of 19 and 39, while 31% were 40 to 60 years of age. Visitors to Las Vegas totaled 37.5 million in 2008, a 4.4% decrease from 2007. Occupancy rates are also down 4.4% to 86% which is the highest of any major destination in the US. Total room nights occupied fell 2.3% to a total of just under 43 million. Room inventory increased 5.7% last year to 140,529.

A total of 44 million passengers were processed through McCarran International Airport in 2008, a 7.7% decrease over the prior year. December's passenger count was just under 3.2 million, a 14.1% drop.

Statewide gaming revenue dropped 18.9% to $888 million in December. Revenue from Clark County casinos fell 18.4% from the same month the prior year, however North Las Vegas casinos posted a 21.8% increase for the month. Statewide revenue dropped 9.7% in 2008, the sharpest drop in state history.

Existing home sales experienced a 72% increase in January over the prior year with 2,737 resales, while new home closings were off 66% at 284. Resale inventory hit its lowest level since September with 20,673 properties listed, or an 8.6 month supply. New and existing home prices decreased 15.3% and 37.1%, respectively.

Statewide, Nevada's taxable sales decreased 10.9% in November to just under $3.4 billion. Clark County sales fell 11.3% to $2.5 billion. Despite overall declines in the county, several categories experienced increases, including construction of buildings (67.4%), specialty trade contractors (17.8%), food and beverage st
ores (5.8%) and accommodation (5.0%).

Nevada's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate reached 9.1% in December, the same rate as Las Vegas. The labor force has grown 4.9% in Las Vegas since December 2007, while the total number of people employed has increased 1.1%.
